BOOK CLUB LESSON: Struggles are a part of life. Persevere, enjoy the journey, and reap the rewards.

Updated: Dec 6, 2019

Reminder! Picture books are not only for young children. If you don't believe me, the stories and lessons in the books below will likely convince you. This coming from a certain 36-year-old that can't get enough of picture books.

In the last few weeks, I find myself talking a lot about the academic journey to student success. It's important to highlight, underline and shine a spotlight on the fact that the road to success is a bumpy one. Ups and downs are a part of life. Let's help our children understand that failed attempts, as much as they hurt, are not only to be expected, they are crucial for growth. Why, because we learn, learn, learn. Learn about ourselves and others. Learn what works and what doesn't. Learn about the world and what's out there — most of which we may not have even imagined. It doesn't help that society generally values success versus the colorful journey to success. Let's do something about it!

The following picture books provide a jumping-off point for a discussion about reaching our goals and understanding the benefit of falling down and getting right back up on the road to success — however you define it.
